Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal disease (or gum disease) begins with inflamed gum tissue
around the teeth and, if left untreated, will eventually cause teeth
to become so loose they fall out or have to be extracted. It is
the major cause of tooth loss in adults - more people lose their
teeth because of gum disease than tooth decay. Fortunately, with
early detection and treatment, it is now possible to minimise the
risks and impacts of the disease.
Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) is a rapid and effective
way for your dentist to identify any periodontal diseases. PSR is
endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and should be conducted
by dentists for all patients as an integral part of oral examinations.
In more advanced cases of periodontal diseases it is necessary
for dentists to remove the source of the infection and allow the
gums to heal. Home care is essential to the continued healing process
and because brushing and flossing generally only reach three millimetres
below the gumline, more specialised tools may be provided.
